RCMP respond to fatal collision on Highway 50

On June 22, at approximately 7:40 a.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle collision on Highway 50, in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone.

Officers, along with paramedics and the local fire department, responded to the scene and located an SUV in the ditch off the highway, its wheels in the water.

RCMP learned the SUV had left Duck Bay and was headed south towards Portage la Prairie when the vehicle struck a bird, causing the 76-year-old male driver to swerve and hit the ditch.

The driver was not injured. However, a 71-year-old female who had been in the back seat died at the scene.

RCMP are investigating. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor.
