Portage la Prairie RCMP arrest two after firearm found at scene of ATV collision

On July 2, at approximately 4:25 p.m., RCMP responded to a report that an all-terrain vehicle with two people had flipped behind a business on the 2200-block of Saskatchewan Avenue West in Portage la Prairie.
Officers arrived at the scene and saw an ATV upside down in the ditch while medical personnel attended to the male driver nearby. A female passenger sat beside him. RCMP learned the ATV had been headed southwest along a walking path when it flipped into the ditch.
Both were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at hospital.
While investigating the scene, a loaded shotgun was located near the overturned ATV. Officers seized the gun.
Jonah Perswain, 26, is charged with:
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
- Unsafe storage of firearms;
- Possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized;
- Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;
- Weapons possession contrary to order x2; and
- Failure to comply with a probation order x2.
He was held in custody overnight, pending a Friday court appearance.
A 47-year-old Edwin female faces charges of:
- Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm; and
- Unsafe storage of firearms.
She was released on an undertaking.
The investigation continues.
