RCMP service dog Czar assisted in the apprehension of a suspect on July 2 on the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.

On July 2, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Virden RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.

RCMP learned a male had entered a residence he was legally not allowed to be in and refused to leave. When officers arrived at the home, the suspect exited out the back door and ran from the scene. RCMP, with the assistance of local First Nation Safety Officers, helped contain the area while RCMP Police Dog Services and the RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System unit drove to the scene.

RCMP located the suspect approximately 4.5 kilometres from the residence. RCMP then tracked the suspect through a large swamp area that was waist deep in parts until police service dog Czar and his handler caught up with him.

Following a brief struggle which saw the suspect assault Czar, RCMP apprehended the suspect – who resisted throughout – and took him into custody. Czar was not hurt.

The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during his interaction with the service dog. He was then transported to the RCMP detachment in Virden for processing.

A 29-year-old male Sioux Valley Dakota Nation male is charged with:

  • Assaulting a police officer;
  • Resisting a peace officer x5; and
  • Failure to comply with an undertaking x2.

The male was remanded into custody.
