Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP arrest male after impaired driver sped past community park on Ebb and Flow First Nation

On July 16, at approximately 4:35 p.m., RCMP witnessed a truck travelling at more than double the posted speed limit near a park on the Ebb and Flow First Nation.

The truck, which officers estimated was travelling at 100 km/h in a 40 km/h zone, was seen near the intersection of Lake Road Northeast and Northwest Road. Officers quickly realized the truck matched the description of a vehicle that fled from police multiple times earlier in the week.

RCMP attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle sped off and turned into a swampy field. The truck briefly stopped to allow a male passenger to get out of the vehicle, then resumed driving around the field before turning back onto the road – nearly getting into a head-on collision with a police vehicle along the way.

A spike belt was successfully deployed by RCMP on Lake Road Southeast, with the truck slowing down considerably and eventually stopping near Road 130 North. The suspect was safely apprehended at that time.

Stewart Racette, Jr., 22, of Ebb and Flow First Nation is charged with:

• Flight from peace officer;
• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
• Operation while impaired;
• Impaired over 0.08 per cent; and
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Additionally, Racette was charged with failure to comply with the terms of his probation order as a result of a previous incident.

Racette was remanded into custody.

The male passenger, a 22-year-old male, turned himself into RCMP on July 17 and faces charges of:

• Resisting/obstructing a peace officer;
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000;
• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; and
• Flight from peace officer.

He was released on an undertaking.

RCMP continue to investigate.
