Selkirk RCMP respond to an assault involving firearm

On Aug. 18, at 1:55 a.m., Selkirk RCMP responded to an assault in progress involving a firearm on Sophia Street in Selkirk. 

Officers attended immediately and heard a disturbance behind a commercial complex. Officers observed a male pointing a firearm at another male who was laying on the ground. The suspect immediately cooperated with officers and dropped his firearm. He was arrested without incident and the victim was brought to safety. 

The victim, a 20-year-old from Swan Lake First Nation, was not injured. 

Officers then learned that the suspect also assaulted a female inside a residence prior to the two males going outside.  The female, a 20-year-old from Selkirk, was not injured. 

Antonio Whitebird, a 22-year-old male from Birdtail Sioux First Nation, has been remanded in custody for the following offences: 
•       Uttering threats;
•       Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose;
•       Assault x2;
•       Pointing a firearm; and
•       Failure to comply with a release order x3.

Selkirk RCMP continue to investigate.
