A multi-organizational, coordinated effort resulted in the rescue of three stranded snowmobilers near Upper Tetagouche Lake, N.B.
On February 17, 2025, at approximately 12 p.m., members of the Campbellton RCMP Detachment received a report of three individuals who were stranded on their snowmobiles near Upper Tetagouche Lake. At the time of the call, they had been stranded for approximately fifteen hours.
Due to inclement weather and the geographical challenge to reach the three individuals, assistance was sought from several partnering agencies. Members of the Chaleur Region RCMP Detachment, Ambulance New Brunswick, Robertville and Sainte-Anne Fire Departments, New Brunswick’s Justice and Public Safety, and the Chaleur Skidoo Club all responded to the area to assist.
With access to an Emergency SOS system on their phones, regular communication was made between the three individuals and first responders, however, concern for their wellbeing grew when they described feeling weak due to the cold wind and winter elements.
At approximately 1 p.m., a groomer driven by a member of the Chaleur Skidoo Club lead three volunteer firefighters on snowmobiles for approximately two and a half hours to the stranded individuals, who had since managed to find partial shelter in a nearby ice fishing tent.
They were safely escorted to a heated snowmobile club by approximately 5:30 p.m., and ultimately, no medical attention was required.
“We are very grateful for the selflessness that these individuals displayed, risking their own lives…” said Cpl. Réjean Richard of the Campbellton RCMP. “Without their dedication and determination, this story could have had a different ending.”
The RCMP reminds everyone to take necessary precautions when venturing deep into the woods. Be prepared for changing weather, carry emergency supplies, pack extra clothing, bring a cell phone charger, and always inform others of your itinerary.
The New Brunswick RCMP sincerely thanks everyone who contributed to this successful rescue.
