A 46-year-old man from Moncton, N.B., has been arrested in connection with a theft that was reported to police through online crime reporting.

On June 21, 2025, an individual used the New Brunswick RCMP’s Online Crime Reporting platform to report a theft from his vehicle in Moncton. The file was sent to the Codiac Regional RCMP for follow-up.

On July 5, the man contacted police to advise that he had found a listing on Facebook Marketplace for his watch; one of the items that had been stolen from his vehicle. As part of the investigation, members of the Codiac Regional RCMP Crime Reduction Unit and the Integrated Enforcement Unit arrested a 46-year-old man on July 8, in connection with the investigation. During the arrest, police recovered the stolen watch and were able to return it to its rightful owner.

The 46-year-old man was later released and is scheduled to appear in Moncton Provincial Court on October 6, 2025.

“The quick and effective results of this investigation speak volumes about how the online crime reporting tool can support efficient policing,” says Sgt. Mathieu Potvin of the Codiac Regional RCMP. “It also highlights how, in situations like this, police have the ability to retrieve stolen property without victims being directly involved.”

Online Crime Reporting gives New Brunswickers, in RCMP area of jurisdiction, an alternate way to report certain non-emergency crimes without calling the police or visiting a detachment. All reports submitted via Online Crime Reporting are reviewed by the RCMP and are entered into the RCMP's record management system. If the incident is still in progress or is an emergency, call the police or 9-1-1 immediately.
