Graduation season is a time to celebrate achievements, friendships, and new beginnings. Don’t let a poor choice on the road change your life forever.
Reducing serious injuries and fatal collisions remains a top priority for the New Brunswick RCMP. And the reality is this: impaired driving continues to be the number one criminal cause of death on our roads.
In 2024 alone, there were 96 fatal motor vehicle collisions in RCMP jurisdictions across New Brunswick.
- 24 people died in crashes involving alcohol or drugs
- 41 people killed were not wearing a seatbelt
These aren’t just numbers; they represent friends, classmates, and loved ones who never made it home.
Impaired driving doesn’t just put the driver at risk; it puts everyone on the road in danger.
It could be your best friend. Your family member. Your neighbour. It could be you.
A seatbelt is your last line of defence in a crash. Not wearing one makes you 30 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle and greatly increases the risk of serious injury or death.
These tragedies are preventable. In fact, over two-thirds (66.7%) of fatal crashes in 2024 involved impairment or not wearing a seatbelt.
This graduation season, make the right choices: buckle up, drive sober, follow the speed limit, and put your phone down.
Plan ahead. Use a designated driver, call a taxi, or arrange a safe ride home. There is always another option.
Everyone has a role to play in road safety. If you suspect an impaired driver, call 911 immediately - it is an emergency, and you could save a life.
Celebrate your future, don’t risk it. Make sure you get home safely.
