Individual sentenced following investigation into various child sexual offences

A 58-year-old man from Cap-Pele, N.B., has been sentenced in connection with an investigation of a man making arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a child.
The investigation began in April 2023 after a referral was received from the Sûreté du Québec - Internet Child Sexual Exploitation Investigations Unit, about a male believed to be located in New Brunswick, who was making arrangements online with another adult to commit a sexual offence against whom he believed to be a child.
On June 21, 2023, police executed a search warrant at a residence in Cap-Pele as part of the investigation, along with members of the Digital Forensic Services and members of the Shediac RCMP detachment. The now 58-year-old man was arrested at the scene. Police seized several electronic devices. The man was released from custody on strict conditions pending a future court appearance.
On August 12, 2024, Rene Godin appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and was charged with making arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a child and making child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
On January 6, 2026, Rene Godin appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and plead guilty to making arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a child and making child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
On July 23, 2026, Rene Godin appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and was sentenced to 24 months in prison. He was also ordered to register with the National Sex Offender Registry and to provide a DNA sample. Following his release from prison, he will have to abide by conditions set out by the court.
The New Brunswick RCMP's Internet Child Exploitation Unit includes a member from the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force.
