My thoughts are with everyone impacted by the incident in Toronto. We understand the worry and uncertainty this shooting has caused, and I want to assure Canadians that the RCMP is working diligently to support this investigation.
This is a national security matter. The RCMP is working closely with the Toronto Police Service, our international partners, and other agencies to understand the motivations of those involved. We are sharing intelligence and operational information in real time to advance this important work.
The RCMP’s responsibilities extend well beyond the Greater Toronto Area. Across the country, we work in close collaboration with police services of jurisdiction, as well as with Global Affairs Canada, to fulfil our mandate to provide protection to designated persons, including foreign diplomats. This includes responding to incidents that occur at, or in the vicinity of, embassies and consulates.
As a precaution, we have increased security around embassies and consulate buildings nationwide. We all play a role in keeping our communities safe, and continued vigilance is essential.
Alongside our policing partners, the RCMP has also increased outreach efforts with community groups and those who may feel particularly affected by this event. Our message has been clear: there is zero tolerance for any form of intimidation, harassment, or harmful targeting of any communities or individuals in Canada. Everyone deserves to feel safe.
Although there is no indication of an immediate threat to public safety at this time, we encourage anyone who sees something suspicious—or who feels threatened online or in person—to contact their local police. If there is immediate danger, please call 9-1-1. Individuals may also report information to the RCMP National Security Information Network online through our website or by calling 1‑800‑420‑5805.
I am confident that, by standing together and supporting one another, we will meet this moment with resilience, compassion, and unity.
