Today, together with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Los Angeles, we announced several arrests and charges against the leaders of three global organized crime networks: Lawrence Bishnoi, Ravinder Dhanda and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria. These groups have been engaged in extortions, drug trafficking, kidnapping and widespread violence – namely the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar – in Canada and the United States.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is committed to detecting, investigating, and disrupting the most significant criminal threats to public safety in Canada, and, to that end, played a pivotal role in today’s outcomes. The investigations were conducted collaboratively with the FBI, ensuring seamless information sharing and coordinated investigative efforts throughout the progression of the investigations.
This is a big moment for the RCMP and for public safety in Canada, the United States and around the world. It is a reminder of what can be accomplished when we work together with partners both in Canada and abroad, meeting criminals where they operate, targeting the leadership structures of these criminal groups, and ending their ability to terrorize and extort people. At the same time, we’re putting a stop to a significant flow of drugs and firearms into Canada.
The events that took place today – arrests and search warrants executed worldwide – were shaped by the combined efforts of Canadian and American law enforcement over the past two years. The majority of arrests occurred in the United States; however, three individuals from British Columbia were taken into custody by the RCMP on Provisional Arrest Warrants and an application will be made to have them extradited to the United States.
Additionally, three search warrants were executed in West Vancouver, White Rock and Surrey.
The value of our international relationships cannot be understated; the momentum we struck by working with police services across Canada will serve as an important foundation moving forward. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to protect Canada from some of the worst threats to the safety and security of our people. We will continue to dismantle criminal organizations that feed drugs, guns and more into our communities.
We won’t pause for long to reflect on the work it took to get this job done – we’ll keep doing what we do best to preserve public safety in Canada, in the United States, and around the world.
