Man sentenced for firearms offences after failing to report to border crossing

A man pleaded guilty to unauthorized importation of a firearm and possession of a loaded prohibited/restricted firearm following an RCMP Federal Policing Pacific Region (FPPR) investigation.

On September 11, 2025, FPPR Border Integrity Operation Centre received information from the United States Border Patrol identifying a male illegally crossing into Canada near the border at 183 Street and 0 Avenue in Surrey, B.C. 

Members of the Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) found the man who was arrested under the Customs Act for failing to report to the border crossing. The man, identified as Jaskaran Banth, was in possession of a loaded handgun, which was subsequently determined to be stolen out of the State of Nevada, United States.

On May 1, 2026, Banth plead guilty to Unauthorized Importation of a Firearm and Possession of a loaded Prohibited/Restricted firearm. 

On July 3, 2026, he was sentenced to 2.5 years in addition to a 10-year firearms prohibition. 

“This investigation illustrates FPPR Border Integrity’s commitment to public safety, protecting our borders, and ensuring illegal imported firearms remain out of the public domain,” says Staff Sergeant John Korbely of the Integrated Border Enforcement Team, FPPR.
