Charges related to bomb threat at US consulate in Halifax

RCMP Federal Policing Eastern Region announces that charges have been laid against Ali Assakereh, 54, in connection with a bomb threat made against the United States consulate in Halifax on August 9.

The investigation, led by the Halifax Regional Police in partnership with Federal Policing Atlantic National Security Enforcement Section determined that Assakereh was responsible for the threat, which resulted in parts of downtown Halifax being shut down for several hours.

During the investigation, Police discovered a propane tank and several containers of flammable liquid inside his vehicle, which was parked near the consulate.

Assakereh faces charges under the Criminal Code including: 

• Threat against internationally protected person (s. 424)

This new charge is in addition to others laid against him by Halifax Regional Police on August 11. Assakereh is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court this morning.  

Appeal to the public

The RCMP takes seriously any threats that can affect one’s sense of security. Violent statements will not be tolerated. Perpetrators may face criminal charges involving significant sentences. Such incidents must be reported if we are to combat this type of crime.
