On Sep. 4, 2026, the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) in Alberta launched an investigation into a user of the social media platform “X”, formerly known as Twitter, that had allegedly posted threats targeting Prime Minister Mark Carney.

On Sep. 9, 2026, INSET arrested and charged Dwight Peter MacIntyre (44), a resident of Edmonton, with uttering a threat to Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney to cause death contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

MacIntyre is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Edmonton on Nov. 25, 2026.

INSET would like to thank the Edmonton Police Service and the Alberta RCMP’s Parkland detachment for their support in this investigation.

Quotes

"People should not assume they can make threats online without consequences. When online comments cross the line into criminal conduct, police will investigate and take appropriate action to hold those responsible accountable. Criminal online actions have real-world consequences, regardless of whether they are made behind a screen."
