A 61-year-old woman was arrested after a traffic stop in Eastport on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the seizure of suspected cocaine.

On March 11 around 12:00 p.m., Glovertown RCMP stopped a vehicle on Main Street in Eastport due to improper registration. During the traffic stop, an officer observed contraband tobacco products in the car and arrested the driver for unlawful possession of unstamped tobacco products.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of suspected cocaine and paraphernalia associated with drug use. The woman was released from police custody pending the results of laboratory testing on the seized substance, with charges anticipated.

Cocaine is a leading cause of overdose deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador. Naloxone is ineffective in combatting cocaine overdose.  If you suspect someone is overdosing on cocaine, immediately seek medical attention by calling 911.
