RCMP Traffic Services West arrested a 27-year-old woman on Friday evening after officers stopped her for dangerous driving, and breath samples confirmed she was operating while impaired.

At approximately 6:45 on March 14, officers patrolling the Main Road in Piccadilly observed a vehicle driving in an erratic manner and at dangerous speeds, up to 88 km/hr over the speed limit. Police initiated a traffic stop, and observed signs of impairment. The driver — a 27-year-old woman — failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.

She was transported to the detachment in Stephenville, where she provided additional breath samples that were more than twice the legal limit.

The woman was charged with dangerous driving and impaired operation. She was also issued tickets for excessive speed and for having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

Police seized and impounded her vehicle and her driver’s licence was suspended. She is expected to appear in provincial court at a later date in relation to the impaired operation and dangerous driving charges.

This week is National Impaired Driving Prevention Week, and RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador officers will be patrolling our roads and trails to ensure drivers and off-road vehicle operators are safe and sober.

Operating any vehicle — including ATVs and snowmobiles – while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a criminal offence. It’s also a reckless and dangerous choice that can cause lifelong injury or death. If you suspect a driver is operating while impaired, please call 911 immediately.
