Police in Happy Valley-Goose Bay arrested a 19-year-old man for impaired operation after he was seen driving a snowmobile in a dangerous manner early Saturday morning.

Shortly after 2:45 a.m. on March 14, Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP officers on patrol observed a person operating a snowmobile in a dangerous manner in a parking lot on Corte Real Road. Police conducted a traffic stop and determined that the operator was a prohibited driver and that he was exhibiting signs of impairment.

The driver failed a standard roadside breath test and was arrested for impaired operation. He was transported to the local detachment where he provided additional breath samples that were over the legal limit.

He was released from custody and is expected to appear in provincial court at a later date to answer to charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, operation of motor vehicle while impaired over 80mg% and operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited.

Impaired operation of any motor vehicle — including all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles — is both a criminal offence and a choice that places the driver and others at an unacceptable level of risk. If you suspect an individual is driving any type of vehicle while impaired, please call 911 to make a report.
