RCMP on the Northern Peninsula stopped a snowmobile operator Tuesday evening for driving while prohibited and arrested the 23-year-old man for impaired operation.
Just before 11:00 p.m. on March 17, a St. Anthony RCMP officer on patrol observed a person operating a snowmobile along Goose Cove Road, while prohibited by the courts from driving any motor vehicle. Police conducted a traffic stop to confirm that the operator was a prohibited driver and observed that he was also exhibiting signs of impairment by alcohol.
The driver failed a roadside breath test and was arrested for impaired operation. He was transported to the local detachment where he provided additional breath samples that were well over the legal limit.
He was released from custody and is expected to appear in provincial court at a later date on charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, operation of motor vehicle while impaired over 80 mg% and operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited.
This week is National Impaired Driving Prevention Week, and RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador officers are patrolling our roads and trails to ensure drivers and off-road vehicle operators are safe and sober.
Operating any vehicle — including ATVs and snowmobiles – while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a criminal offence. It’s also a reckless and dangerous choice that can cause lifelong injury or death. If you suspect a driver is operating while impaired, please call 911 immediately.
