Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP arrested an 18-year-old man on Saturday night after he fled from the scene of a motor vehicle collision in Botwood. He faces charges of failure to stop, operation while prohibited and breach of court-ordered conditions.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. on March 21, Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP were called to a hit-and-run collision on Military Road in Botwood. Two vehicles collided, and one driver left the scene without assessing if any injuries had occurred and without exchanging information.

The other driver provided a description of the vehicle and a passenger who had exited the car and fled the scene on foot. No injured were reported as a result of the collision.

Police located the suspect vehicle abandoned off the road a short distance away. The driver was located at a house in Peterview shortly after midnight and taken into custody.

He was released with conditions and will appear in provincial court in April to face charges of:

  • Failure to stop after an accident (Criminal Code)
  • Unlawful operation of a conveyance while prohibited (Criminal Code)
  • Failure to comply with undertaking (Criminal Code)
  • Operating vehicle without an insurance policy (Highway Traffic Act)
  • Driving an unregistered vehicle (Highway Traffic Act)

The investigation is ongoing.
