Seven drivers were stopped and ticketed for speeding over the weekend, as officers with Bay St. George and Clarenville RCMP conducted proactive traffic safety patrols in our communities. One of the seven also had his driver’s licence suspended and vehicle seized after he was caught traveling more than 50km/hr over the posted speed limit.

Between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon, Bay St. George RCMP officers conducting traffic patrols in Kippens, Stephenville and Noel’s Pond stopped three drivers observed speeding. All three were able to provide proper documentation to police, and were issued summary offence tickets under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding.

Clarenville RCMP also conducted dedicated traffic enforcement activities on the Trans-Canada Highway and other roadways on Saturday afternoon. Between 1:30 and 4:15 p.m., three drivers were stopped for travelling faster than the posted speed limit. All three were confirmed to be operating with the required licence, registration and insurance, and received summary offence tickets under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding.

A fourth driver, a 49-year-old man, was caught by police traveling at speeds up to 127 km/hr in a posted 70 km/hr zone on the Trans-Canada Highway Saturday evening around 6:00 p.m. Due to his excessive speed, his vehicle was seized by officers and impounded, and his driver’s licence was suspended roadside.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador urges motorists to slow down and drive with added caution as weather and road condition can change and deteriorate quickly. The extra minute or two that you might save by speeding is simply not worth it. There are penalties like fines, or having your license suspended or vehicle impounded. But there are far worse consequences, like life-altering injuries or even death.
