RCMP West District General Investigation Section (GIS) arrested two people after a traffic stop near Deer Lake resulted in the seizure of cocaine, pills, cash and drug paraphernalia.

Just before 1:00 p.m. on April 1, an officer with West District GIS on patrol on the Trans-Canada Highway outside of Deer Lake stopped a vehicle near Pynn’s Brook. The driver and a passenger were arrested after police observed a substance believed to be cocaine inside the car. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of a quantity of suspected cocaine, pills, a sum of cash and items consistent with illicit drug activity.

The driver, a 37-year-old man, and his passenger, a 29-year-old woman, were each charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in cocaine under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and possession of property obtained by crime under the Criminal Code.

Both were later released from custody on strict conditions, and are expected to make a first appearance in Corner Brook Provincial Court in late August 2026.

The investigation is continuing, and additional charges are possible.

Cocaine is a leading cause of overdose deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador. Naloxone is ineffective in combatting cocaine overdose.  If you suspect someone is overdosing on cocaine, immediately seek medical attention.
