A 47-year-old man had his vehicle seized and licence suspended roadside after he was stopped for excessive speeding by RCMP Traffic Services West Thursday morning.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. on April 10, 2026, an officer with RCMP Traffic Services West observed a vehicle travelling at speeds up to 103 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone on the Main Road in Upper Ferry.

A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was ticketed for excessive speeding. His licence was suspended, and his vehicle was impounded by police.

As warmer weather and longer days arrive in Newfoundland and Labrador, it can be tempting to hit the gas pedal and enjoy the open road. But excessive speed is one of the most common contributors to serious motor vehicle collisions. There are penalties for speeding – like fines, having your license suspended or seeing your vehicle seized and impounded. But there are far worse consequences: you could seriously hurt yourself, your passengers, other drivers, pedestrians or animals. In some cases, your speed could cause life-altering injury or cost someone their life.
