A stranded snowmobiler was returned safely to his community thanks to Hopedale Ground Search and Rescue volunteers last night.

Around 6:15 p.m. on April 29, 2026, Hopedale RCMP received a report of an overdue snowmobiler in the Hunt’s River area. A family member received a message from the stranded man via a satellite GPS device, indicating that he was stuck and unable to return safely.

Officers engaged Hopedale Ground Search and Rescue who deployed volunteers to assist the snowmobiler. He was located and fortunately did not require medical attention.

Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) teams across the province go above and beyond to help those who find themselves in emergency situations and or in need of aid. RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador thanks all dedicated GSAR volunteers for your commitment to the safety of our communities, not only in this incident but year-round across the province.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of carrying a reliable communication device, such as a satellite GPS messenger or SPOT device, when travelling in remote, rural and backcountry areas where cell phone service may not be available. This snowmobiler’s ability to send a message with his coordinates contributed to volunteers being able to locate him quickly and safely.

As we transition into spring, RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador reminds all off-road vehicle users, including snowmobilers, to plan ahead. Notify others of your planned route and estimated time of arrival at your destination or return home, and always carry the supplies needed in case of an emergency.
