Whitbourne RCMP is investigating a collision involving a commercial tractor trailer unit and a passenger car that resulted in traffic delays on the Trans-Canada Highway Wednesday afternoon. The injury collision also resulted in a fuel spill, which was contained by first responders.

At approximately 12:45 p.m. on May 6, Whitbourne RCMP, with assistance from Traffic Services East and Clarenville RCMP responded to a two-vehicle crash approximately 1-km west of the Little Harbour East junction on the Trans-Canada Highway. Members of the Sunnyside Fire Department and emergency medical services personnel also responded to the crash.

The crash caused extensive damage to the passenger vehicle, which left the roadway. The driver of that vehicle sustained what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported by NL Health Services emergency medical services personnel to hospital for medical assessment and treatment.

The commercial vehicle involved sustained significant damages that resulted in a fuel leak, but that driver was not injured.

The Departments of Transportation and Infrastructure, Conservation and Climate Change were engaged to assess and facilitate the clean up of a diesel fuel spill.

The driver of the passenger vehicle – a 34-year-old man – was found to be driving despite being medically suspended from operating a motor vehicle.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and charges under the Highway Traffic Act are possible.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador also thanks NL Health Services, Sunnyside Fire Department, Newfoundland Towing and Recovery and Decker Towing and Recovery for their assistance at the scene.
