RCMP Traffic Services teams in Eastern, Central and Western Newfoundland stopped a total of 930 vehicles during this year’s Canada Road Safety Week (May 12 - 18), and over the long weekend in May. In total, officers spent over 400 hours conducting check points and traffic stops, issuing tickets for speeding, lack of seatbelts, distracting driving, aggressive driving and various other offenses.
RCMP Traffic Services officers conducted a dozen checkpoints throughout the regions and were pleased to report that no drivers were found to be operating while impaired. However, 80 vehicles were stopped for aggressive or dangerous driving during the weeklong enforcement blitz, and eight drivers were found to be operating without a seatbelt.
Additional patrols and check stops were conducted by detachments across the province as officers work to enforce the rules and regulations and educate drivers on safe driving practices.
The rules of our roads are non-negotiable – obeying posted speed limits, moving over for emergency vehicles and choosing to drive safe and sober are just a few of the requirements for those behind the wheel. Driving aggressively, driving while distracted or driving while impaired places you and everyone else on the road at unnecessary risk of serious injury or death.
Every time you get behind the wheel, your choices matter. Canada Road Safety Week is our annual reminder to slow down, stay focused, driver sober and always wear your seatbelt.
RCMP officers see firsthand how one poor decision behind the wheel can change lives in an instant. That’s why you’ll find us on the roads every day across Newfoundland and Labrador, continuing to enforce traffic laws and keep our roads and communities safe.
