Lewisporte RCMP is investigating a collision between two vehicles that closed the highway and left a 38-year-old woman in hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday night.
At approximately 11:35 p.m. on June 3, Lewisporte RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway approximately one kilometre east of Norris Arm North. Members of the Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue and emergency medical services personnel also responded to the crash.
Preliminary findings indicate that a passenger vehicle crossed over the centre line of the highway and collided with a commercial tractor-trailer, before coming to rest off the side of the highway.
The operator of the passenger vehicle, a 38-year-old woman, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She showed signs of impairment, was arrested for impaired operation, and transported to hospital where blood samples were collected. Police are awaiting on the results of the forensic blood analysis to determine if charges of impaired operation are appropriate.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.
The TCH was closed for approximately an hour and a half while emergency crews responded to the scene.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador also thanks NL Health Services and Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue for their assistance at the scene.
Impaired operation of any motor vehicle is a choice that places the driver and others at an increased, unnecessary and unacceptable level of risk. If you suspect an individual is driving while impaired, please immediately call 911 to make a report.
