Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP arrested 50-year-old Reginald White on Wednesday afternoon after officers responded to Buchans for reports of a firearms-related incident involving threats of harm.
Just before 10:30 a.m. on June 3, Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP responded to a report of man threatening to harm others known to him. Police learned that the individual was travelling in a vehicle and believed to be in possession of a firearm.
The Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services (PDS) were engaged. Springdale RCMP and RCMP Traffic Services West officers were called to assist, as well.
The described vehicle, with the suspect inside and unresponsive, was quickly located at a location along River Road in Buchans Junction. Police contained the area, and as a precaution - with public safety in mind - residents were advised to remain away from the area and stay indoors.
The suspect was identified as Reginald White, 50, and was eventually taken into police custody without incident. Police located and seized a firearm from inside the vehicle.
White was transported to the Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP detachment where he was held to appear in court today (June 4). He faces the following Criminal Code charges including:
- Uttering threats against a person,
- Careless use of a firearm,
- Possession of weapon contrary to order,
- Possession of a firearm when knowing the possession is unauthorized, and
- Failure to comply with a probation order – four counts.
The investigation is ongoing.
RCMP NL reminds the public that the unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a weapon without proper authorization and making threats involving a firearm are serious offences that pose a significant risk to public and police safety. Any report involving a firearm is treated with the utmost priority, and individuals found in violation of firearms legislation may face charges under the Criminal Code and/or Firearms Act. We urge anyone with information about illegal firearms activity to report to police, or in case of emergency 911, immediately.
