A Clarenville RCMP enforcement initiative resulted in nearly twenty Highway Traffic Act tickets and written warnings for various offences, including speeding on the Trans-Canada Highway and area highways. Officers also responded to report of a possible impaired driver resulting in a 7-day licence suspension and attended to an injury collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle.

Between Wednesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 4 officers stopped passenger vehicles on Clarenville-area roads, Route 230 near Lethbridge and the Trans-Canada Highway, looking for impaired, distracted and aggressive drivers, speeding, seat belt use, and ensuring vehicles and drivers operate safely and with the appropriate documentation.

During traffic enforcement conducted over the two-day period, officers issued 16 tickets for various traffic violations. The majority of these enforcement actions involved speeding offences. Officers stopped a number of motorists travelling significantly above the posted speed limit, with recorded speeds ranging from 25 km/h to 42 km/h over the limit.

One motorist was stopped and ticketed for operating an unregistered vehicle. While four drivers were issued written warnings for speeding offences and one operator for a vehicle defect.

On Wednesday just before 8:00 a.m., police responded to Shoal Harbour Drive to a collision between a SUV and a motorcycle. The motorcycle operator was transported to hospital by NL Health Services personnel for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Later Wednesday afternoon, at around 4:00 p.m., one motorist was stopped on the Trans-Canada Highway after police received information from a concerned citizen who observed the vehicle driving in an erratic manner. The vehicle operator, a 79-year-old man, showed signs of alcohol impairment.  A roadside breath test was conducted, and he provided a breath sample that was above the provincial limit but below the criminal threshold for impaired driving. His vehicle was seized by police, and he was issued a seven-day license suspension under the provincial Highway Traffic Act.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador urges motorists to slow down and plan ahead. The extra minute or two that you might save by speeding is not worth it. There are penalties like fines, having your license suspended or seeing your vehicle seized and impounded. But there are far worse consequences: you could seriously hurt yourself, your passengers, other drivers, pedestrians or animals. In some cases, your speed could cause life-altering injury or cost someone their life.

If you suspect someone is driving while impaired or in a dangerous manner, please immediately call your local police detachment or 911.
