Clarenville RCMP arrested a 48-year-old man for impaired operation after responding to a report of a person who appeared to be unconscious behind the wheel of a parked vehicle Tuesday night.
On June 9, shortly before 9:45 p.m., Clarenville RCMP received a report of a driver who appeared unconscious while behind the wheel of a parked vehicle at a gas station in Goobies. Police attended the scene and located the vehicle, which was running but parked.
The driver, a 48-year-old man, was approached by officers who confirmed he was not in medical distress. The man showed signs of intoxication and failed a roadside breath test.
He was arrested for impaired operation and brought back to the Clarenville RCMP detachment, where he provided additional samples in excess of the legal limit.
The man’s licence was suspended and his vehicle was seized and impounded. He was held overnight and released to appear in court today on charges of:
- Impaired operation
- Impaired operation over 80mg%
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a dangerous and reckless choice that can cause life-altering injury or death. Under Canada’s Criminal Code, a person can be charged with impaired operation or having care or control of a vehicle while impaired, even if the vehicle is parked or not moving. Sitting in the driver’s seat with access to the keys while impaired may be enough to warrant impaired operation charges.
Always have a safe plan to get home: you can call a friend, have a designated, use a rideshare, taxi or public transportation or stay the night. If you suspect someone is driving while impaired, call 9-1-1.
