RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador are reminding residents to be aware of the risks involved with buying and selling online, after recent reports of a scam involving the sale of a recreational vehicle

In early June, Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP received a report from an individual who was attempting to sell a vehicle online using a popular website. Someone posing as a potential buyer requested a vehicle history report, and provided a link to a website.

Once the seller received the report, they realized that the website fake. As they had provided their credit car information to the site, they reported the transaction to police and financial institution, and they were able to cancel their card avoiding any further fraudulent transactions.

The incident is an important reminder to be safe and scam savvy when buying or selling an item online. Be sure that you verify information and do your research, beware of requests to cover fees or pay money up front, and always use reputable sites if you are making a purchase online.

It’s estimated that only 5 to 10% of all fraud and cybercrime incidents are currently reported in Canada, likely because of embarrassment, fear of reputational damage, or a lack of awareness of what resources are out there. RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador reminds all residents that you are never alone in the fight against cybercrime, scams and fraud. We encourage you to reach out to police for support and resolution.

If you believe you are the victim of a fraud or scam, please contact your local police detachment to make a report. You can find your RCMP detachment at rcmp.ca/en/nl/detachments
