RCMP officers in Lewisporte arrested a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man during separate traffic stops on Saturday evening, after police responded to multiple calls about a possible impaired driver.

On June 20, starting at approximately 5:30 p.m., Lewisporte RCMP responded to calls about of a possible impaired driver on Main Street in Stanhope, and began patrols in the area.

During their investigation into the reported vehicle and driver, a 30-year-old man approached police in a separate vehicle. He exited his vehicle and an officer observed signs of impairment. The man was given a roadside breath test and failed. He was arrested and transported to the Lewisporte detachment where further testing confirmed his impairment.

The 30-year-old Lewisporte man will appear in court at a later date to answer to charges of impaired operation and impaired operation over 80 mg%. His vehicle was also seized and impounded, and his licence was suspended by police.

The driver and vehicle from the initial call were later located on Main Street. The driver — a 29-year-old Grand Falls-Windsor woman — showed signs of impairment and was provided a demand for a roadside breath test. She refused to comply and was arrested.

She will appear in court in September 2026 to answer to charges of refusing to comply with a demand related to alcohol. Her licence has been suspended, and her vehicle was seized and impounded.

Refusing to comply with a demand issued by police as part of an impaired operation investigation is a criminal offence. If convicted, this offence carries the same penalties as a charge of impaired operation.

Impaired drivers place themselves and all others who share the roadway at an unacceptable risk of serious injury or death. If you suspect a driver is operating a vehicle while impaired, please call 911 immediately.
