A woman has been charged with impaired operation after RCMP officers responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 340 on Monday night. A second driver, a 22-year-old man, had his licence suspended after he was pulled over and provided police with a breath sample that was above the provincial limit.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on June 22, Lewisporte RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Route 340 near Twillingate. Police, local firefighters and Emergency Medical Services personnel attended the scene. The driver of the vehicle — a 39-year-old woman — was transported to hospital for assessment and treatment of minor injuries.

When officers arrived, they noted signs of impairment. The woman was provided a demand for a blood sample in hospital. Police are waiting on the results of that testing to determine if charges of impaired operation are appropriate.

Around the same time, another officer patrolling Route 340 closer to Lewisporte stopped a driver to assess the safety and roadworthiness of their vehicle. The driver, a 22-year-old man, showed signs of impairment and a roadside breath test was administered. The result was over the provincial limit, but below the criminal threshold for impaired operation.

The man was issued an automatic licence suspension, and his vehicle was seized and impounded by police.

Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is an unacceptable and unnecessary choice that puts everyone on our roads, trails and waterways at risk. If you suspect someone is operating any vehicle while impaired, call 911 immediately to make a report.
