RCMP officers in Sheshatshiu arrested a 20-year-old man on Monday afternoon after responding to a call about a possible impaired driver.
On June 22, shortly after 2:00 p.m., Sheshatshiu RCMP responded to a report of a driver parked in a running vehicle on the beach off Mistashini Crescent. Police located the vehicle and observed signs of alcohol intoxication, and the driver — a 20-year-old man — was taken into custody.
The man was provided with a demand for a breath sample to confirm impairment, and he declined to do so. While being transported to the detachment, he refused to cooperate with some officer demands, and caused minor damage to the back of the police vehicle.
He was charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and mischief causing damage under $5,000.
The man was released from custody to appear in court at a future date. In addition, his driver’s licence was suspended and the vehicle he was driving was later towed and impounded by Sheshatshiu RCMP.
Refusing to comply with a demand issued by police as part of an impaired operation investigation is a criminal offence. If convicted, this offence carries the same penalties as a charge of impaired operation.
Impaired drivers place themselves and all others who share the roadway at an unacceptable risk of serious injury or death. If you suspect a driver is operating a vehicle while impaired, please call 911 immediately.
