A 44-year-old man was taken into custody by RCMP Traffic Services East Wednesday evening when a traffic stop revealed that he was prohibited from driving Canada-wide under the Criminal Code.

On July 1 around 8:15 p.m., an officer patrolling on Central Street in Bay Roberts observed a vehicle traveling with an illegible licence plate attached.

Police stopped the vehicle and learned that the driver — a 44-year-old Marysvale man — was the subject of a two-year Canada-wide driving prohibition, ordered by the provincial courts in July 2024.

He was arrested and later released to appear in provincial court at a future date on one new charge of driving while prohibited.

The vehicle he was driving was seized by police and impounded.

RCMP officers proactively patrol roadways across Newfoundland and Labrador looking for impaired drivers, checking for seatbelts and ensuring vehicles and drivers are operating safely and with the appropriate documentation. Motorists are reminded to drive safe, drive sober and ensure that your licence, registration and insurance are always up to date.
