Clarenville RCMP and RCMP Traffic Services Central are investigating the cause of motor vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) near Hillview that resulted in the death of one individual on Saturday.
At approximately 6:40 a.m. on July 4, Clarenville RCMP responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision between a sport utility vehicle (SVU) and a commercial tractor trailer unit on the Trans-Canada Highway in Hillview near the Route 205 exit. Members of the Northern Bight Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel also responded to the crash.
The occupant of the SUV, a 76-year-old man, was rushed from the scene to Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The driver of the transport truck was also transported to local hospital by NL Health Services personnel for medical assessment and treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
A Collision Reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services attended the scene to assist with the investigation, and the highway was closed for several hours while officers examined the scene and crews took steps to clear debris - including spilled hazardous fluids - in order to make the roadway safe for passage.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been engaged and the investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing at this time.
Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police and anyone with available surveillance or dash cam footage are asked to contact the Clarenville RCMP detachment at 709-466-3211.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador offers its sincere condolences to the friends, family and community of the deceased.
We sincerely thank all motorists and residents impacted by the closures for their patience, understanding and full cooperation. We recognize the significant impact these closures had on travel and appreciate everyone who respected the road closure and allowed emergency responders and investigators to safely complete their work and ensure the highway was safe.
RCMP NL also extends its appreciation to the Northern Bight Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services personnel, local tow operators including Riverbend Heavy Towing and Recovery, collision analyst investigators, traffic control personnel and all other responders for their professionalism and dedication which ensured the scene was managed safely and the highway was reopened as soon as possible.
