Off-road vehicle operators in the Whitbourne area will see an increased police presence as officers hit the trails to enforce all rules and regulations outlined in the Off-Road Vehicles, Highway Traffic and Liquor Control Acts, as well as the Criminal Code.

As the summer recreation season kicks off, all off-road vehicle operators, parents and guardians are reminded that you are required to understand and obey the laws and regulations in your area, including municipal guidelines. Summer off-road vehicles include all-terrain vehicles, quads, side-by-sides and dirt bikes.

Placentia-Whitbourne RCMP officers will be patrolling looking for common Highway Traffic and Off-Road Vehicles Act infractions, like:

  • operating without helmets or seatbelts,
  • operating without a valid licence, registration or insurance where these are required,
  • youth operating without proper supervision,
  • riders operating at excessive speeds,
  • operation in areas where off-road vehicles are not permitted.

Police will also be looking for Criminal Code violations like impaired driving or possession of stolen vehicles.

Failure to abide by the laws and regulations can result in enforcement action being taken, including tickets, fines, vehicle seizures and impoundments, licence suspension or criminal charges.

This initiative is one example of increased enforcement activity on trails and waterways across the province this summer. Officers will be on patrol to ensure Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are safely enjoying our beautiful outdoors.

A reminder that operating any vehicle — including all off-road vehicles, boats and personal watercraft — while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is impaired driving, and carries the same charges and penalties as operating your car when intoxicated. It is a choice that presents an unnecessary and unacceptable risk of serious injury or death, and it will not be tolerated.

If you witness dangerous or illegal off-road vehicle operation, including unsafe operation involving youth, are encouraged to report concerns to their local police and provide as much information as possible, including vehicle description, location and direction of travel.
