Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP is investigating a suspicious fire extinguished near a Newfoundland Power substation west of Port aux Basques on Friday. Police are now asking the public to come forward with any information about this incident.
Just before 11:00 p.m. on July 10, Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP responded to a report of a small brush fire extinguished by crews with the Port aux Basques Volunteer Fire Department. The fire was discovered in the vicinity of a power substation situated along the Trans-Canada Highway west of the town of Port aux Basques.
Following an initial examination of the scene, police believe the fire may have been intentionally set.
The investigation is ongoing and is being supported by RCMP Forensic Identification Services (FIS).
The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands Resource Enforcement Division has also been engaged.
