Deer Lake RCMP responds to off-road vehicle fire, two youths injured

Deer Lake RCMP and the Cormack Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of an off-road vehicle fire Tuesday that resulted in injuries to two youths. Police are reminding off-road vehicle users to put safety first, be prepared and follow the rules and regulations outlined in the Off-Road Vehicles and Highway Traffic Acts.

Just before 5:00 p.m. on July 14, police in Deer Lake responded to a report of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on fire near Veterans Drive in Cormack. Members of the Cormack Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Health Services personnel also responded to the fire.

The youth operating the ATV and their passenger both sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to hospital for medical care and treatment.

Parents and guardians are reminded that proper supervision of young riders is mandatory and their important role in ensuring young riders understand and follow the applicable laws. Under provincial legislation, youth under the age of 16 must be properly supervised while operating an off-road vehicle. Proper supervision means the supervisor must:

• be at least 18 years of age,
• hold a valid driver’s licence,
• have successfully completed approved provincial off-road vehicle safety training,
• be able to see and be seen by the youth operator at all times, and
• be in a position to provide immediate direction at all times.

Young operators must only use vehicles that are appropriate for their age and size in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

In addition, RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador strongly encourages off-road vehicle operators to perform a pre-trip inspection of their machines in an effort to ensure they are in good working condition. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador requires all off-road vehicle operators to  carry a fire extinguisher with a minimum of 225 grams of ABC-class dry chemical when travelling in grassy or wooded areas, however, you should have one on your machine at all times for your safety and the safety of others. 

If you witness dangerous or illegal off-road vehicle operation, including unsafe operation involving youth, are encouraged to report concerns to their local police and provide as much information as possible, including vehicle description, location and direction of travel.
