Gander District RCMP stops driver travelling 60+ km/hr over the posted limit

A man had his vehicle seized, licence suspended and was issued multiple tickets earlier this month after police caught him driving almost 70 km/hr over the posted speed limit while wearing in-ear headphones.  

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. on July 11, an officer with Gander District RCMP observed a vehicle travelling at speeds up to 128 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone on the Trans-Canada Highway near Gander. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop but were not initially successful. After some time, the driver complied and pulled over to the side of the highway. 

The driver, a 30-year-old St. John’s man, admitted he had been driving with in-ear headphones (earbuds) in his ears and could not hear the sirens. He was ticketed for his speed and for driving without due care and attention. 

His licence was suspended, and his vehicle was seized and impounded. 

Actions that distract a driver or limit their awareness of surrounding traffic, including the use of headphones or earbuds, can have serious consequences and may result in tickets, fines, demerit points or criminal charges in cases involving injury. 

RCMP reminds motorists that safe driving requires your full attention. Slow down, eliminate distractions and remain alert to road conditions, traffic and emergency vehicles.
