Forteau RCMP responds to ATV collision

Forteau RCMP is investigating a collision between two all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) Monday that resulted in two youths sustaining serious injuries. All parties involved were transported to the Labrador South Health Centre for medical assessment.

On July 20, just before 5:30 p.m., an off-duty RCMP officer in Forteau responded to an ATV collision on Western Brook Road in L’Anse au Clair, alongside Emergency Medical Services personnel. 

As a result of the collision, two youths — an operator and passenger of one of the ATVs — sustained serious, potentially life-altering injuries. Both have been transported to larger hospitals for continued treatment. The adult driver of the other ATV and their passenger were uninjured. 

All parties were wearing helmets at the time of the collision. The ATVs were damaged in the collision and were towed from the scene as part of the investigation. 

The investigation is ongoing, with future charges possible. 

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador reminds all off-road vehicle operators, especially caretakers with youth riders, to put safety first and adhere to all rules and regulations. Every time you ride, remember that: 

• Supervision is mandatory for all operators under the age of 16 in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The supervisor must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s licence, they must complete approved provincial off-road vehicle safety training, and they must be able to see, be seen by and provide immediate director to the youth operator at all times.
• Young operators must only use vehicles that are appropriate for their age and size in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
• You are required to wear a properly fitted helmet and use seat belts if your machine has them. 
• Operating any vehicle — including all off-road vehicles, boats and personal watercraft — while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is impaired driving.
• You are responsible for understanding and abiding by the provincial Off-Road Vehicles and Highway Traffic Acts.
