Placentia-Whitbourne RCMP responds to erratic driving complaints, arrests impaired driver

A 36-year-old Torbay man was arrested and charged with multiple Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act offences, including impaired and dangerous driving, after Placentia-Whitbourne RCMP responded to reports of a possible impaired driver Wednesday night.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on September 2, police received several calls about a possible impaired operator driving erratically and speeding on the Trans-Canada Highway, travelling towards Whitbourne.

Police officers conducted immediate patrols and radar captured the described vehicle travelling at speeds up to 170 km/hr where the posted speed limit is 100 km/hr. Police caught up to the vehicle as the operator pulled into a business parking lot

Officers observed clear signs of impairment and identified the driver of the vehicle as Stephen Cecil Miller, 36, who was operating his vehicle with a suspended licence.

He was arrested and transported to Whitbourne RCMP detachment. His vehicle was seized and impounded, and his driver’s licence was further suspended.

He was held in custody and will appear in Harbour Grace Provincial Court today (Thursday, September 3) to answer to charges of:

• Impaired operation of a motor vehicle – Criminal Code,
• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle – Criminal Code,
• Failure to comply with the conditions of a release order – Criminal Code,
• Operation of a motor vehicle while suspended – Highway Traffic Act,
• Exceeding the speed limit by 51 km/hr and over – Highway Traffic Act,
• Operation of a vehicle without a valid insurance policy – Highway Traffic Act,
• Operation of an unregistered or unlicenced vehicle – Highway Traffic Act.
