Burin Peninsula RCMP responds to public concern, arrests impaired driver

A 38-year-old man was arrested and charged with impaired driving Friday night, after Burin Peninsula RCMP responded to a dangerous driving complaint. 

Just before 11:00 p.m. on September 25, police in Marystown received a call from a concerned resident about a vehicle speeding and passing vehicles dangerously in the community. Police located and stopped the described vehicle on McGettigan Boulevard. 

Officers observed signs of impairment and open liquor in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, a 38-year-old Beau Bois man, failed a roadside breath test and was arrested for impaired operation. 

Police also discovered that the man’s driver’s licence was suspended, and he was unable to produce his physical licence or provide proof of insurance or registration.

He was transported to the Burin Peninsula RCMP detachment where further breath samples confirmed his impairment. 

The man was released from custody under conditions of the court and will appear in Grand Bank Provincial Court in October 2026 to answer to charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation over 80 mg%. 

His vehicle was seized and impounded by police, and he was ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act for operating a vehicle with a suspended license, failure to produce a driver’s license and operating a vehicle without insurance. In addition, ee was ticketed under the Liquor Control Act for having open alcohol in his vehicle. 

Impaired operation of any motor vehicle is a choice that places the driver and others at an unnecessary and unacceptable level of risk. If you suspect an individual is driving while impaired, please immediately call 911 to make a report.
