Burin Peninsula RCMP has been conducting proactive traffic enforcement patrols this week in the lead up to the long weekend, and seized three vehicles from uninsured drivers. Motorists are reminded to drive safely this Thanksgiving, and to ensure that all required documents (including licence, registration and insurance) are valid and available for inspection.

On Wednesday, October 7, shortly after 10:15 p.m., officers travelling Route 210 near Terrenceville stopped a vehicle with an expired out-of-province licence plate. Police confirmed that the vehicle was not registered and or insured. The driver, a 34-year-old man, was ticketed for each offence and the vehicle was impounded.

On Thursday night, just after 11:00 p.m., officers stopped a vehicle on Ville Marie Drive that was displaying a licence plate that did not match the vehicle’s make and model. When police approached the driver, they confirmed that the car was not registered or insured, and learned that the driver was operating with a suspended licence. The 22-year-old man was issued three summary offence tickets and the vehicle was seized by police and impounded.

A short time later, around 11:15 p.m. officers on patrol stopped a vehicle on McGettigan Boulevard after an initial check indicated the vehicle was uninsured. The driver was not able to provide police with proof of a valid insurance policy, and was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act. The 21-year-old man’s vehicle was also towed from the scene and impounded.

RCMP officers on the Burin Peninsula and across Newfoundland and Labrador are conducting traffic patrols looking for speeding and impaired drivers, checking for seatbelts and ensuring vehicles and drivers are operating within the law and with the appropriate documentation

No matter how you’re celebrating this long weekend, it is essential to put safety first. Slow down and plan ahead for heavier traffic on our roads. Stay alert for wildlife and drive according to road and weather conditions. If your plans include drugs or alcohol, have a plan to get home safely and do not drive impaired.

If you see someone driving dangerously, or suspect they may be impaired, call 911.
