A 32-year-old driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving during a traffic stop near Lewisporte Thursday night. His passenger, a 26-year-old man, was also arrested and faces charges including resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
On November 5, Lewisporte RCMP conducted a proactive traffic stop of a vehicle traveling Route 341 outside of Stanhope. The driver, a 32-year-old Lewisporte man, showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside breath test.
He was arrested for impaired operation and transported to the detachment where further testing confirmed impairment at two and a half times the legal limit. His vehicle was seized and impounded by police, and his licence was suspended.
The man was released from custody with conditions and will appear in Gander Provincial Court in February 2027 to answer to charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation while equal to or over 80 mg%.
A passenger inside the vehicle was also arrested during the stop for obstructing the officer and resisting arrest. The 26-year-old Lewisporte man now faces Criminal Code charges of obstruction, resisting arrest and assault against a police officer.
Impaired operation of any motor vehicle is a choice that places the driver and others at an unnecessary and unacceptable level of risk. If you suspect an individual is driving while impaired, please immediately call 911 to make a report.
