Yarmouth Town RCMP charged one person with multiple weapons offences and seized a firearm. An emergency alert was distributed in the community and canceled when the risk to public safety was resolved.

On April 10 at approximately 5:05 p.m., Yarmouth Town RCMP responded to a report of a fight between two people near the intersection of Forest St. and William St. in Yarmouth. One of the people involved was in possession of a firearm. When officers arrived on scene, the people and the vehicle reportedly associated to them were gone.

Investigators obtained descriptions of the person with the firearm and identified him as Christian Lasaga. Based on the public safety risk, an emergency alert issued through Alert Ready directing people to shelter in place.

At approximately 7:20 p.m., investigators learned that Lasaga was at a residence in Yarmouth. Officers attended and safely arrested him inside the home. They also located and seized a firearm matching the description of the shotgun the Lasaga had been in possession of earlier in the day.

Christian Lasaga, 30, of Yarmouth, is charged with 16 offences including Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Unauthorized Possession of Firearm, Tampering with Firearm Serial Number, Failure to Comply with Release Order (3 counts), and Failure to Comply with Probation Order (3 counts). He also had an outstanding warrant associated to an unrelated investigation.

Lasaga had first court appearance on April 13 at Yarmouth Provincial Court. He remains in custody pending future court appearances.

The emergency alert was cancelled at 7:33 p.m. More information about when, how, and why Nova Scotia RCMP issues alerts is available here
