Inverness County District RCMP has charged a Scotchtown woman with multiple offences after she fled from police in a stolen truck, drove dangerously through two counties, and nearly struck police vehicles.

On June 23, at approximately 1:35 p.m., an RCMP officer observed a vehicle that had been reported stolen travelling southbound on Hwy. 344 in Aulds Cove. Two officers conducted a traffic stop on the grey Chevrolet Silverado when the driver, after pulling over, reversed the truck toward a police car and fled at a high rate of speed.

The Silverado then travelled eastbound on Hwy. 104, weaving into oncoming vehicles. After becoming stuck in traffic near the Canso Causeway, the driver again reversed and backed along the highway in the wrong direction, nearly striking another police vehicle.

In the interest of public safety, officers did not pursue the Silverado.

At approximately 1:40 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call reporting a grey Chevrolet Silverado travelling westbound on Hwy. 104 toward Antigonish at high speed, passing vehicles in the oncoming lane. Officers patrolled the area but were unable to locate the truck.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., as a result of the ongoing investigation, the driver of the Chevrolet was located on the Old Mulgrave Rd. and arrested by Antigonish County District RCMP.

Tanya Marie Young, 36, of Scotchtown, has been charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Flight from Police
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000
  • Assault on Police Officer with a Weapon

She’s also facing charges in relation to breaches of a release order.

Young was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Antigonish Provincial Court on July 15.
