The Nova Scotia RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit and Colchester County District RCMP are investigating after human remains were reported near Debert. 

On July 22, officers received a report of possible human remains found in a wooded area in the vicinity of Debert. Officers attended the scene, recovered the remains, and confirmed them to be of a man.

The Nova Scotia RCMP is working with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to confirm the man’s identity and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

Since the discovery of the remains, investigators have conducted additional searches in the area to locate further evidence. 

Criminality is believed to be a factor in the death. Investigators do not believe there’s a risk to the public.

“Since the man's remains were discovered, extensive searches have been conducted in the area,” says Cpl. Mandy Edwards, Nova Scotia RCMP Public Information Officer. “We understand there’s been rumour and speculation within the community, and that this may’ve caused distress. However, our primary responsibility is to protect our ability to investigate.” 

The investigation is in the early stages. No more information can be released at this time.
