Search efforts by RCMP and partner agencies believed to be associated to fraudulent report

Victoria County District RCMP is investigating a report of a medical emergency that is now believed to be a scam.
On August 24 at approximately 3:45 p.m., Victoria County District RCMP received a third-party report of a person with a medical emergency on trails near Ingonish Beach. The report came through 211 Nova Scotia after it had been contacted via text to request help.
RCMP and partner agencies including Parks Canada, EHS, and fire services responded immediately and conducted extensive patrols in the area. Searchers used tools including off-road vehicles and a remotely piloted aircraft system (drone) and shared information about the search with other trail users.
RCMP called off the search after several hours with no further contact from the person claiming to be in distress and no evidence to suggest anyone needed medical support in the area around Ingonish Beach.
Victoria County District RCMP now believes that the texts were a scam and potentially a version of “swatting,” a false report about an emergency or serious incident meant to illicit a significant reaction from first responders. The investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the messages.
Officers appreciate the response from the many community partners and individuals who supported search efforts.
