A Pictou County man is charged with multiple offences after two collisions, one involving a stolen car, in Pictou and Colchester counties.

On October 30 at approximately 1:25 p.m., during a proactive traffic patrol, a Pictou County District RCMP officer observed a vehicle without a licence plate on Lawrence Blvd. in Stellarton. The officer then observed that the vehicle, a red Hyundai Elantra, went the wrong way through a traffic circle, exiting back onto Lawrence Blvd.

The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver did not stop, and continued westbound on Lawrence Blvd. When the car reached MacGregor Ave., it struck another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection.

The driver of the Elantra exited the car and fled on foot. The three passengers from the Elantra were safely arrested.

As officers were responding to the collision, they learned that the driver had just stolen a different vehicle, a black Honda Civic, from a nearby parking lot and left the area in that car.

Information about the stolen vehicle was shared with other Pictou County District RCMP officers, RCMP in neighbouring counties, and municipal police agencies in the area.

Despite the driver having fled the scene, officers identified him and learned that he was wanted on province-wide arrest warrant associated to a robbery that occurred in Abercrombie on October 25.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., Colchester County District RCMP responded to a report of a head-on collision between the newly stolen Honda Civic and a transport van on Pictou Rd. in Bible Hill. The driver fled on foot before first responders arrived on scene. Officers believed it was the same person who had fled from the collision in Stellarton hours earlier.

Investigators learned that the driver was at a residence in the 200-block of Pictou Rd. Officers attended and he was safely arrested.

Steven Michael Lawrence, 33, of Pictou County, had a first court appearance on November 2. He is charged with six offences: Dangerous Operation of Conveyance (motor vehicle), Robbery, Flight from Peace Officer, and Failure to Comply with Release Order (three counts). These new charges are in addition to the three charges related to the arrest warrant: Robbery with a Firearm, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Failure to Comply with Undertaking. He remains in custody pending future court appearances.

The three passengers arrested at the initial collision on Lawrence Blvd. will face charges related to obstructing an investigation. They were released by police pending future court appearances.

During searches of the vehicles operated by Lawrence, investigators seized two unattached licence plates, several knives, cannabis products, and two bottles containing a powdered substance believed to be cocaine. Further testing will be done to confirm.

Anyone with information about these investigations who has not yet spoken with police is asked to contact Pictou County District RCMP or Colchester County District RCMP. Contact information for Nova Scotia RCMP detachments is available here.
