On December 18, 2024 at approximately 1:25 a.m, the Clyde River RCMP received a call for service at a residence in the 200 block. Due to poor visibilities and poor road conditions caused by a blizzard, RCMP officers responded on snowmobile.

When RCMP officers arrived to the residence, they arrested a male. The male was actively resisting police and disabled the officers’ snowmobile. RCMP officers tried to walk the male to the detachment, but were unable as the male continued to resist and tried to escape from police custody. Because of deteriorating weather conditions, the officers decided to seek shelter, and were assisted by a local residence who agreed to house the officers and the person in custody.

Officers were able to contact a local hamlet official, and ask for assistance.  The hamlet official was able to get one of their heavy equipment operators pick up one of the officers from the residence, using a snow plow and drive him to the detachment to retrieve the police vehicle. The officer was able to return to the residence to pick up the remained officer and prisoner and return them to the detachment. After the storm, another local man assisted officers in repairing their snowmobile to working order.

The Clyde River RCMP have charged 36-year-old, Jessie Iqalukjuak with:

  • Assault Causing bodily harm, Section 267(b) C.C
  • Resist Arrest, Section 129(a) C.C
  • Mischief, Section 430(4) C.C
  •  Escape from Lawful Custody, Section 145(1) C.C

Iqalukjuak was released and his next court appearance is scheduled for February 24, 2025 in Clyde River, Nunavut.
